Core Protection & Monitoring Capabilities

1. Stator Differential Protection

The 489 employs high-speed dual-slope differential protection to detect and clear stator phase faults rapidly. It also integrates advanced CT (Current Transformer) saturation detection algorithms: these algorithms use a directional check to remain immune to saturation caused by external disturbances. This additional supervision ensures the relay only triggers a trip if the fault is confirmed to be internal to the generator—preventing false trips and ensuring reliable operation.

2. Power Protection (Forward & Reverse Power)

To prevent generator motoring (a condition that can damage the prime mover), the 489 includes low forward power and reverse power elements. For each element, independent settings are available for power pickup thresholds and operational delays—supporting both alarm activation (for early warning) and trip initiation (for critical fault mitigation).

3. Frequency Protection

Operation of generators at off-nominal frequencies poses severe risks to both the generator and its associated prime mover (particularly steam turbine generators operating below normal frequency). The 489 addresses this with overfrequency and underfrequency protection elements. It features configurable alarm levels to alert operators of abnormal frequency conditions, plus multiple trip levels—each with independent tripping delay settings tailored to different magnitudes of frequency deviation.
